A deed poll is a legal document that proves a change of name. You can change any part of your name, add or remove names and hyphens, or change spelling. It is, in effect, a contract with yourself where you agree to renounce your old name and adopt your new name. It is a legal document and, in Jersey, must be passed through the Royal Court.
Trans* Jersey can assist you with writing your deed poll; getting your signatures witnessed by an advocate, solicitor or notary; where to buy the court stamps; and, how to pass the deed poll through the Royal Court.
Trans* Jersey has partnered with BCR Law to keep the cost of acquiring your deed poll to just the statutory cost of the court stamps (£60). BCR Law are supporting the transgender and non-binary community by offering to witness signatures on deed polls for no charge. We are very grateful for their support.
Guidance on the law around writing a deed poll can be found here, but if you would like further advice and help with writing your deed poll, please email us admin@transjersey.org
